History of the Village

The Village of Grand River, Ohio, has a rich history that dates back to its establishment in 1832. Originally named Richmond, the village was founded by land speculator Thomas Richmond, who began selling lots across the Grand River from the settlement of Grandon (today Fairport Harbor).

The community thrived on the assumption that the Ohio Canal would terminate at the Grand River, and by 1835, Richmond boasted a population of 2,000 residents, rivaling Grandon in the shipbuilding industry. However, when the canal ultimately terminated in Cleveland, the village faced economic challenges, exacerbated by the Panic of 1837, leading to its decline. Despite these setbacks, the village was incorporated in 1888 and later renamed Grand River Village, reflecting its enduring connection to the waterway. Today, Grand River is a charming community located approximately 30 miles east of Cleveland, nestled between the city of Mentor and Painesville Township.

Notably, it is the hometown of Don Shula, the legendary professional football coach who led the Miami Dolphins to two Super Bowl victories, including an undefeated season in 1972.
